Although this blog was created before SIU's spring break '09, this is our first blog.
Many might be familiar with Vampire Weekend because it is featured as part of the Step Brothers soundtrack. I loved the musicality of the entire album. Vampire Weekend has devoured Afro-pop, English ska, and punk as though those genres were great literary works, and this CD is its final exam. They combine a cornucopia of instruments including a kettle drum, harpsichord, and a violin if my ears don’t deceive me. I will say that despite listening to it a number of times, the lyrics haven’t stuck with me as being terribly insightful. That doesn’t mean that they’re not, just that they haven’t caught my attention. Still, the musical quality of the album is fantastic. This band from New York has gone far from Columbia University. They have been featured on David Letterman and in an article in the New York Times.
If you long for the days when you were an annoyingly well-read, hyper-energetic college kid who geeked out over music and pop-culture trivia — or if you were never any of those things, but always wondered what it would feel like — this CD will feel as comfortable to you as a well-worn Ralph Lauren cardigan.
